Understanding Professional Nanny Rates

.
One of the most common questions we hear at CincyNanny:
what should families expect to pay, and what should professional nannies expect to earn?

I wish it was a short answer! Professional nanny compensation is shaped by experience, training, responsibility level, and the complexity of the role. In other words, rates reflect more than time—they reflect skill, judgment, professionalism, and the level of partnership required within a home.

I have seen so much misinformation specifically on social media, so I wanted to take the time to communicate the ranges we see. Compensation is often the single most attractive element of a role. A professional nanny will not leave a current role for a lower paying position. A rate a family sets communicates that they value the role of the nanny and understand the market. It shows that they are invested in and respectful of the long-term working relationship they are setting up.

So hear me when I say: it’s important to get it right.

EMERGING
At the early stage of a nanny’s career, typically within 0-2 years of experience, we see rates in the $20–22 per hour range. These caregivers may have limited professional experience, often coming from babysitting, summer nanny roles.  Nannies at this stage are building their foundation, and families hiring in this range are usually looking for basic childcare support in simple roles. Warning: a family may be able to secure a nanny at a lower hourly rate, but it will not be long before an emerging nanny notices she can changes jobs for a quick increase in pay.  .
.
ENTRY
As nannies grow into the 2-4 year range, compensation generally sits at $22–25 per hour. These caregivers have developed basic childcare experience across infants, toddlers, preschoolers, or school-age children. They are still building their professional skill set, but often have a stronger sense of routine, structure, and consistency. Providers are becoming more confident in managing day-to-day care. With 2 years of professional childcare experience they can now apply for long-term placement through CincyNanny, which will include completing professional assessments.
.
EXPERIENCED
Between 4-7 years of experience, we can see rates increase to the $25–27 per hour range. At this level, nannies are experienced across multiple age groups and often bring some specialized training, such as infant care, preschool curriculum exposure, or structured developmental activities. They are generally comfortable managing daily schedules and family routines with a high level of independence. Families hiring at this stage are often seeking someone who can confidently take ownership of the flow of the day without heavy direction.
.
EXCEPTIONAL
With 7-10 years of experience, rates typically increase in range from $27–30 per hour. These caregivers often can manage more complex roles such as nanny shares, family assistant positions, or household coordination responsibilities. Many bring specialized skills such as special needs experience, bilingual communication, or educational enrichment. At this level, nannies are often managing multiple children, coordinating logistics, and supporting the household in a more integrated way beyond just childcare.
.
EXPERT
For those with 10+ years of experience, rates can rise to  $30–35+ per hour. These are highly experienced professionals who may hold advanced certifications, specialize in complex family structures, or manage demanding schedules and responsibilities. Nannies at this level often bring a leadership presence into the home and function as a true partner in both childcare and household systems.
.
In our graphic, each level of experience is designed to build on the one before it. For example, all professional nannies across every level should be CPR and First Aid certified and have strong, excellent references. These are foundational expectations, not tier-specific requirements.
.
While experience is a major factor in compensation, it is not the only one. Rates can also vary based on the number and ages of children, the complexity of the schedule, expectations beyond childcare, the level of autonomy required, and any specialized skills or certifications. Two roles that look similar on paper can require very different levels of energy, organization, and expertise in practice. It’s also important to note that a candidate may be highly skilled and successfully operating in a more complex or demanding role, and therefore be compensated at a higher rate—even if they do not yet have the years of experience typically associated with that level.
.
For families, understanding these ranges helps set realistic expectations and supports the process of attracting qualified, long-term professionals who are aligned with the needs of the home. For nannies, it reflects the value of growth, training, and the increasing responsibility that comes with experience in this field.
.
